The disease in which there is an inflammatory process in the urethra is called urethritis, and the treatment of this ailment depends on the cause and the causative agent of the infectious process.

How is urethritis treated

The prognosis of urethritis in men depends on the correctness of diagnosis, the sooner the cause of inflammation is identified and treatment is applied, the higher the probability of a speedy recovery bypassing complications and relapses. To achieve the effectiveness of treatment it is necessary to go through several stages:

Diagnosis of the disease

Examination of the genital organs is carried out, as well as manifesting symptoms. More frequent characteristic symptoms are painful urination and discharge from the urethra.

The following tests are needed to identify the causative agent of the disease:

  • Blood test. Needed to identify and identify sexually transmitted infections.
  • Analysis of urine. Determines the general condition of the body and the presence of an infectious process.
  • The analysis of a smear from the urethra is needed to determine the microflora and the type of microorganisms that caused inflammation.

Urethritis treatment methods

In order to recover from this disease, it is necessary to stop the spreading infection in the body, removing the focus of inflammation. It is also important to return the functionality of the urethra. The purpose of treatment is dictated by the form of the disease.

In case of an infectious urethritis, they undergo a course of antibacterial therapy (Azithromycin, Metronidazole, Doxycycline, Ceftriaxone), for non-infectious urethritis (allergic, traumatic, congestive) they eliminate the cause of inflammation. In case of allergic urethritis, antihistamines are used (Suprastin, Tavegil). In case of traumatic urethritis , surgical intervention is possible, injection of uroseptic drugs directly into the urethra aimed at restoring the urethral mucosa is also effective. To get rid of congestive urethritis, it is necessary to increase physical activity, which will eliminate blood stasis in the pelvis. Also used drugs to eliminate venous insufficiency (Eskuzan, Venza).

Do not forget about the restoration of microflora after antibiotic therapy, this will help probiotics (Linex, Bifidumbakterin). Also for the fastest recovery should be taken immunomodulators (Cycloferon, Uro-Vakson).

It is necessary to correct the diet, reducing the consumption of foods that irritate the mucous membrane of the urethra (sour, spicy, spicy foods and also products with preservatives).

Re-examination

At the final stage, it is necessary to re-examine and pass tests to exclude the presence of the disease in the body.

The course of treatment of urethritis lasts from two weeks to a month, it all depends on the severity of the disease and compliance with the prescribed therapy. Urethritis very rarely requires inpatient treatment, so at home an important role is played by the correct intake of prescribed drugs, the abandonment of sexual relationships and diet.

Preparations

The following medications are needed in men’s urethritis treatment program:

  • Antibacterial drugs for oral use (Doxycycline, Azithromycin, Ceftriaxone, Metronidazole). Needed to fight bacteria that contributed to the development of urethritis.

  • Antibacterial drugs for local use (Miramistin, Potassium permanganate, Protargol). To flush out the infection from the urethra. When using washing the urethra with these drugs kills up to 80% of bacteria.
  • Antiviral drugs (acyclovir, riboverin, Gerpevir). When a viral cause of the disease. Note!

The use of antibiotics for viral infections is inappropriate, because they do not affect the viruses.

  • Antihistamines (Suprastin, Loratadine, Cetirizine). Will help with the allergic form of cystitis. Probiotics (Linex, Bifidumbacterin). It is important to take them along with antibiotics to restore microflora.
  • Immunomodulators (Cycloferon, Uro-Vakson, Flogenzym, Gepon). Increase the protective capabilities of the body, which contributes to the speedy recovery, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence of the disease.
  • Vitamin and multivitamin complexes (Vitrum, Duovit, Multitabs). Needed by the body with a deficiency of nutrients in the diet.
  • Phytopreparations (Gentos, Tsiston, Kanefron-N). Used with uncomplicated forms of cystitis or as concomitant therapy.

The result of treatment depends on the selection of drugs. Upon detection of pathogens in the analyzes after the treatment, re-treatment is prescribed with the prescription of another series of antibiotics.

Antibiotic treatment

The use of antibiotics for the treatment of urethritis is based on the results of diagnosis, taking into account the identified pathogen. Also take into account the age of men, the presence of chronic diseases and the cause of urethritis. Antibiotics are started as early as possible, observing the norms and regimen of drug administration More popular because of the convenient use of tableted drugs. The prescription of antimicrobial agents depends on the type of bacterial urethritis, therefore, most often they use:

With trichomonas urethritis Metronidazole, Doxycycline.

  • Metronidazole – has antibacterial, trichomonacid and protivoyazulny action. Quickly absorbed by the body creating bactericidal concentrations. Do not recommend to men with a diseased liver. Necessarily simultaneous treatment of sexual partners.
  • Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Be sure to take with meals with plenty of fluids. Recommend during the reception to avoid sun exposure.

When gonococcal urethritis prescribed cephalexin, azithromycin, metronidazole.

  • Cefalexin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Highly concentrated in the kidneys, therefore, often prescribed for diseases of the genitourinary system.
  • Azithromycin – creates high concentrations in the foci of inflammation by exerting a bactericidal effect. The advantage of this drug in maintaining bactericidal properties within 5 – 7 days after administration, it is possible to prescribe short courses of treatment (from three to five days).

When non-gonococcal urethritis helps Azithromycin, Fluconazole, Ofloxacin.

  • Fluconazole – has a pronounced antifungal effect, is used to treat infections caused by fungal microorganisms. It is well tolerated. Can be taken regardless of the meal. Use with caution in renal failure.
  • Ofloxacin is effective in relation to microorganisms resistant to most antibiotics. It is used in urethritis due to its ability to be 80% excreted in the urine and is in it for up to 24 hours. While taking the drug, it is not recommended to use means that reduce the acidity of the stomach, which reduces the effectiveness of therapy.

For urethritis of unknown causes , azithromycin, metronidazole, doxycycline, cephalexin is prescribed.

Chronic urethritis

In case of not properly selected treatment or late diagnosis of urethritis, it becomes chronic, which is characterized by not pronounced symptoms, consisting in scanty discharge from the urethra and itching of the genitals. Also, chronic urethritis is characterized by a wave-like course, when the stages of exacerbation of the disease are replaced by the stages of remission. Running urethritis leads to the spread of the disease to neighboring organs and tissues. Treatment of chronic urethritis in men requires more thorough diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

Used drugs :

  • Antibiotics with a wide spectrum of action (Doxycycline, Norfloxacin, Cefalexin, Ofloxacin, Gentamicin). Essential for fighting urethritis-causing bacteria.
  • Antifungal drugs are taken in identifying the fungal nature of the disease (Fluconazole, Mikosept).
  • Phytopreparations (Canephron H, Cyston). Often used for chronic comorbidities, as they have a minimum of contraindications. They are the number one drugs of choice in the presence of contraindications to the use of antibacterial drugs.
  • Probiotics (Linex, Acipol). To restore the microflora disrupted medication.

Instillation of the urethra when the drug is injected directly into the urethra. These procedures are carried out in the hospital with sterility.

Physiotherapy procedures have a destructive effect on bacteria, reduce the activity of the inflammatory process and activate the immune functions of the body. Especially recommend the use in the presence of complications in men (prostatitis, epididymitis).

During electrophoresis sessions, the drug enters the body with the help of an electric current, which enhances its action.

UHF therapy improves blood circulation and healing of the affected mucosa.

Laser therapy has an anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic effect, improves blood supply to the tissues, increasing cellular immunity.

Physiotherapy procedures are contraindicated in the presence of a malignant tumor of the prostate.

Dieting and drinking . Reducing the use of products that irritate the mucous membranes and increase the products with a diuretic effect contributes to recovery. With abundant drinking decreases the concentration of urine, and it does not irritate the mucous membrane of the urethra. Therefore, it is necessary to drink at least 2 liters of pure water per day.

Personal hygiene . Shower, washing of genitals after urination and sexual contacts prevent the reproduction of microorganisms.

Enhance immunity. For this, it is recommended to use not only drugs and herbal medicine, but also to go in for sports and give up bad habits.

Acute Urethritis

The main thing in acute urethritis – this is quickly started treatment. In men, acute urethritis is often treated with a ten-day course of doxycycline. This is due to its activity against a significant number of microorganisms and bacteria. The use of azithromycin is also effective. This treatment course lasts from one to five days. This short course of taking the drug has fewer side effects, but is ineffective in infectious processes in the prostate.

In acute urethritis is characterized by a painful manifestation of symptoms, therefore, include painkillers (No-spa, Baralgin) in therapy. Also facilitate the patient’s bed rest.

For patients with urethritis, it is necessary to be examined for the presence of sexually transmitted diseases.

Nonspecific urethritis

In cases of non-specific forms of urethritis, the urethra is “attacked” by microbes constantly residing in our bodies (streptococci, E. coli, staphylococci, fungi). High immunity prevents their reproduction, so the main treatment is aimed at improving the protective properties of the body. Begin treatment with immunostimulating drugs (Cycloferon, Uro-Vakson, Flogenzym, Gepon). After immunomodulators, antibiotics are prescribed , which are selected depending on the course of the disease and the complications encountered in the progression process.

Antibacterial therapy is also applied topically in the form of washing the urethra (instillation). When using instillations, microorganisms are washed out of the urethra, but it is often not recommended to use this procedure, since the mucous microflora is disturbed.

In the chronic course of non-specific urethritis, physiotherapy is effective (electrophoresis, UHF, laser therapy). In cases of acute disease, physiotherapy is undesirable. Treatment of non-specific urethritis does not require treatment of a female partner.

In addition to drug treatment, it is also necessary to adhere to the general rules:

  • Refrain from sexual intercourse.
  • Follow a diet (limit spicy, sour, salty foods, and alcohol).
  • To adhere to the therapeutic drinking regimen (drink at least 2 – 2.5 liters of water per day, include in the diet fruit drinks and herbal diuretic teas).
  • To eliminate the systematic ingestion of toxic substances (tobacco, alcohol, drugs, chemicals).

Bacterial urethritis

Therapy of bacterial urethritis is conducted with antibacterial drugs , to which the sensitivity of the pathogen has been proven laboratory. Fortifying therapy is also conducted with the aim of stimulating immunity and local washing of the urethra for its complete purification from pathogens and their metabolic products.

Often men are exposed to bacterial urethritis after endoscopic procedures or using a catheter, so it is important to observe the sterility of all items in contact with the urethra. With prolonged use of the catheter, it is necessary to carry out timely rehabilitation of the urethra.

Candidiasis urethritis

Antibiotic and antifungal therapy is used to treat candidal urethritis in men . The treatment is carried out at home under the supervision of a physician. Most often for the treatment of this urethritis use fluconazole, levorin, amphotericin, nystatin.

To restore the protective properties of the body take immunostimulants . The use of enzyme preparations is required due to the improvement of microcirculation in infectious foci and an increase in the effectiveness of the action of drugs, which helps to reduce the duration of clinical manifestations of urethritis and the duration of its treatment. More enzymes are used to prevent prostatitis, which often occurs as a complication of urethritis.

Local procedures are also used. These are instillations of the urethra with a solution of levorin, collargol, antibacterial creams for external use (clotrimazole, pimafucin).

It is important in the treatment of food, in which it is better to exclude products that promote the development of the fungus (flour products, sugary drinks) and add to the diet products that prevent the growth of the fungus (onions, garlic, propolis).
Treatment must be carried out together with the sexual partner and it is better to refrain from sexual intercourse until cure.

Treatment of folk remedies

Folk remedies for the treatment of urethritis in men are used in addition to medical treatment. In the acute course, herbs are used for a monthly course, and in chronic course the course is prolonged to one year, but with obligatory interruptions. Plants used must have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects. The following recipes have proven most effective:

  • Herbal tea. For making tea, one tablespoon of raw materials (currant leaf, lingonberry leaf, or lime blossom) is enough to boil a glass of boiled water in a thermos for 20-30 minutes. Drink 30 – 40 minutes before meals.
  • Infusion of parsley. To prepare in 500 ml. water at room temperature, add a tablespoon of fresh parsley and leave to infuse for 7 hours. Take 100 ml. every three hours.
  • Infusion of parsley seeds. To prepare 1 teaspoon of seeds, pour a liter of cold water and leave to infuse for 8 – 10 hours. Strain and take three tablespoons every three hours.
  • Wheat grass infusion. It is necessary in a glass (250 ml) of cold water, add 2 tablespoons with a slide of chopped raw material and leave for 12 hours. After filtering and re-pour the grass with a glass of boiling water for 10 minutes. Mix both filtered infusion and 100 ml. take three times a day.
  • Herbal collection. Take 20 grams of elderberry, inflorescences of chamomile, St. John’s wort grass, and 10 grams of cornflower and calendula. A tablespoon of the prepared collection is brewed with a glass (250 ml.) Of boiling water, after forty minutes, filtered and drunk overnight.
  • Cranberry juice. 500 grams of berries to stretch and squeeze the juice. Cake pour two liters of water and bring to a boil. Strain and add strained juice, and you can slightly sweeten with honey or sugar. Take no less than a liter a day.
  • Black currant in fresh and brewed. It is better to eat currants separately from food intake. For brewing, they take both fresh and dried berries. One tablespoon of fresh currant is brewed with a glass of boiling water and left for 20 minutes. Dry berry is better to brew in a thermos, a cup of boiling water is enough a teaspoon of dried berries.
  • Also use trays of brewed chamomile for washing the genitals. Chamomile is a good antiseptic with anti-inflammatory action.
  • Treatment with a decoction of oak bark is also used in the form of baths. To do this, one teaspoon of crushed bark is poured in a thermos with a glass of boiling water and infused for at least three hours. Use a warm filtered infusion for five-minute baths of the genitals three times a day. The course duration is three days. You should refrain from sexual intercourse during treatment.

There are many ways to treat urethritis with folk remedies, but medical advice is needed before use.
